The United Nations has sent its Special Rapporteur Mutuma Ruteere to Greece to evaluate the level of racism and discrimination that exists in the country.
Ruteere will stay in Greece from Monday May 4 to Friday May 8, in order to perform the first official mission to Greece by the independent expert mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to assess and report on the state of racism, racial discrimination and related intolerance in the world.
“This visit will allow me to learn more, firsthand, about the context of racism and discrimination in Greece, as well as about all the initiatives and efforts undertaken by the government to combat this phenomenon,” Ruteere said in a statement handed out to the media.
“I should then be able to provide observations and concrete recommendations to help fight racism and other forms of discrimination in the country.”
Special Rapporteur Mutuma Ruteere, who was invited to the country by the Greek government is scheduled to meet with state officials, representatives of the legislative and judicial branches, UN agencies in the country, the National Human Rights Commission and the Ombudsman.
Furthermore, a press conference will be held at the end of his visit on Friday, May 8, 2015, at the Journalists’ Union in Athens, to present the expert’s preliminary findings and his recommendations. A final report will be presented by the Special Rapporteur to the UN Human Rights Council in 2016.
