German Finance Ministry: IMF's Role in Greek Debt Negotiations Essential

Berlin,_Mitte,_Wilhelmstraße,_Detlev-Rohwedder-HausThe role of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in negotiations over Greece’s reforms program is absolutely necessary, according to Germany’s Finance Ministry.
“We believe it is absolutely essential that the IMF participates,” Finance Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger said in a regular government news conference.
Greece is trying to reduce the IMF’s role in deliberations and focus mainly on the aid of European institutions. Also, German tabloid Bild reported on Friday that the European Commission is planning a special summit on the Greek debt issue without the participation of the IMF.
A spokesperson for the German government said no such summit is planned to her knowledge and she stressed talks with Greece must progress with all three institutions; the IMF, the European Commission and the European Central Bank (ECB).
