Olympiakos Wins Greek Football Cup1
Olympiakos
has won the 27th Greek Football Cup and the 17th Double in the club’s history, after playing at the Olympic Stadium in Athens against Skoda Xanthi. The match ended with Olympiakos scoring 3 goals, while Skoda Xanthi scored 1.
This was the first time that Skoda Xanthi was able to reach the Greek Football Cup final, claiming the first title since it was founded in 1967. About 30,000 Olympiakos fans and 4,000 Skoda fans, who traveled from northern Greece, attended the match to encourage the teams.
Franco Jara, Alejandro Dominguez and Costas Fortounis scored for Olympiakos, while Pantelis Kapetanos netted Xanthi’s consolation goal.
A defensive mistake in first-half injury time gave Olympiakos the lead when Jara intercepted a backward pass inside the area.
In the 63rd minute, Dominguez began a run inside his own half, burst through two defenders and blasted a shot into Xanthi goal’s left corner.
Fortounis made it 3-0 in the 80th with a free kick from 25 meters (yards) and Kapetanos pulled one back for Xanthi in the 87th from close range.
Olympiakos is the most successful club in Greek football history, with 42 Greek League titles, 27 Greek Cups, 17 Doubles and 4 Greek Super Cups. Olympiakos’ dominating success can be further evidenced by the fact that all the other Greek clubs have won a combined total of 37 League titles.
