Just a few hours before the G7 summit in Germany, the US official spoke about the Greek crisis noting that no one should be under the illusion that they can assess the consequences of a Greek exit from the Eurozone.
“It is in everyone’s interest to resolve the Greek issue,” he said.
The message he sent to the Greek government was clear: “There is certainly a need for Greece to come up with a program that is credible.”
He also added that the country’s creditors need to be more flexible in order to avoid an accident. He added that a Grexit would mainly affect Greece as a country, but it would also have consequences on a global level.
“I don’t think anyone wants this to blow up. What I worry about is the accident. There are moments where just a miscalculation could lead to an exit that would be potentially very damaging,” Lew said.
Jack Lew calls Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras
The US Secretary of Treasury also called Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to convey to him that Greece needs to come to an agreement with its creditors as soon as possible, adding that the U.S. will support both parties involved in the negotiation.
At President Obama’s request, Jack Lew will raise Greece’s issue at the G7 summit in Germany. The U.S. official will ask the G7 participants to reach a constructive and realistic solution through the negotiations in Brussels, as soon as possible.
