SYRIZA Parliamentary Group Meets to Discuss Negotiations

ko_syrizaSYRIZA lawmakers have asked for an emergency Parliamentary Group meeting to discuss the progress of negotiations and the proposed plan presented to creditors for an agreement.
The initiative was taken by the so-called SYRIZA’s left platform led by Productive Reconstruction, Environment and Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis. The meeting will take place on Thursday in order for MPs to be briefed and have a clear picture of negotiations.
The party lawmakers want to know if Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras — who has taken negotiations upon himself — is willing to cross the government’s red lines and accept a deal that will include measures contrary to SYRIZA’s pre-election pledges and the party’s leftist principles.
The move raises questions on how the left platform MPs would vote when the agreement is tabled in parliament. The “honest compromise” the Greek government is talking about when describing the desired deal after the tough negotiations is open to interpretation.
The left platform insists on a rift with creditors and the European Union if they ask for austerity measures in order to continue financial support. With a new text on their website iskra.gr they use harsh language against Europe and the International Monetary Fund and propose that Greece must seek financial aid and alliances elsewhere. The text also says that Greece has alternative solutions to the debt problem and European partners dread the alternatives.
SYRIZA parliamentary representative Nikos Filis said that if 12 out of the 162 coalition lawmakers vote against the deal and the government doesn’t get the majority votes required, then the country will go to snap elections.
