There were no concessions during the meeting between Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis and his German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble, which took place today, June 8, in Berlin.
The German Finance Ministry announced that there would be no press conference after the meeting. Varoufakis noted that the meeting took place in a friendly and productive atmosphere, however the news regarding Greece’s negotiations with its partners does not appear as positive.
According to Greek Finance Ministry officials during the meeting in Berlin, Varoufakis and Schaeuble may have reached common ground in regards to the structure of the Greek problem, however they expressed different approaches on how to solve it.
Furthermore, Varoufakis stressed that he did not travel to Berlin in order to negotiate the solution that Schaeuble wishes to impose. “Dr. Schaeuble and I had a long, productive discussion. These are difficult times for the European Union and especially the Eurozone and it is the elected politician’s duty to take responsibility at a high level and try to reach an agreement, which is necessary for Eurozone’s cohesion, for the European Union,” said Varoufakis.
The Greek minister also noted that “we have a common understanding of the problem and the meeting’s purpose was to attempt to achieve a jointly designed and agreed solution to the impasse we have reached in recent years.”
The meeting between Yanis Varoufakis and Wolfgang Schaeuble came only two days before the critical meeting between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande in Brussels.
