American Students Getting to Know Greece

american-students The University of Washington in Seattle has launched an original summer program in recent years, highlighting the beauty of Greece.
The program was the idea of professor Stergios Fotopoulos who has been teaching statistics at the university since 1985. Every May since 2009 the professor travels to Greece with a group of students from the Business Administration department. The educational program includes excursions to different cities and visits to archaeological sites, while students also get acquainted with the daily Greek life.
According to Greek newspaper “Kathimerini,” the program lasts six weeks and this year professor Fotopoulos along with a colleague have started their journey from Athens where they visited the Acropolis Museum and then travelled to Lamia, Meteora and Delphi. Then they returned to Piraeus where they took the ferry to Crete and visited Balos, Chania, Gaidouronisi, Knossos and the Samaria Gorge, while later they travelled to Santorini.
However, these trips are not unaffected by the economic situation in Greece, since, according to the professor, in past years the number of participants had reached 25 students, while currently there are no more than 15. “I want to believe that this is not related to the negative publicity that our country has received abroad, but with the addition of new destinations,” he explained, noting that similar field trips to Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Thailand and China are also provided by the university.
