EU Waters Down Plan to Aid Greece with Migrant Issue

The European Union recently proposed a plan to help Greece and Italy with the thousands of migrants crossing the Mediterranean sea. These plans will be watered down during the EU Interior Ministers meeting which will take place on Tuesday, June 16.
The original plan provided, says EU member states would take in about 40,000 Syrian and Eritrean migrants who have arrived in Greece and Italy. The number of migrants who would be transferred to other EU countries would be estimated based on economic strength, unemployment rates and the countries’ efforts to host migrants in the past.
However, not all member states agree with this plan and 10 countries would prefer the program to be voluntary. Hungary and the Czech Republic oppose the plan outright.
Around 100,000 migrants arrived in Europe over the last year, many of whom settled in Italy and Greece. EU nations, however, have failed to show any solidarity to the countries that receive the largest number of migrants.
“We will defend our proposals to the last word,” commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said Friday.
Meanwhile, an EU official noted that several compromises would have to be made in Tuesday’s meeting. “We will have to avoid the word ‘voluntary’ and the word ‘mandatory’ and then find a way for everyone to participate,” he said.
The plan will be presented and discussed in Brussels on June 25 and 26 during an EU leaders meeting. If an agreement is not reached until July, then the plan may be put on hold.
