The 11th annual Athens Pride took place in downtown Athens on Saturday, June 13. This year’s event used the slogan “Take a Stand,” demanding equal rights for the LGBT community. Greek artists such as Polina, Demy, Melisses, Marietta Fafouti and Afroditi Manou performed in Klafthmonos Square for the crowd gathered to support the cause.
Naturally, the event reached its peak during the famous Pride parade, where participants marched the streets of Athens as a symbolic move, showing their pride and respect for diversity.
Greek Parliament President Zoe Konstantopoulou also attended the event and was urged by the crowd and organizing team to stand on the podium in Klafthmonos Square and address the crowd.
Konstantopoulou cheerfully stated that she was enjoying the event. “I was planning on staying in the crowd, but I think it is important that the parliament makes its presence known. Say “Yes” to rights, “No” to homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia and racism, to discriminations of any kind, no matter where they stem from or where they occur,” she said.
Konstantopoulou added that not all rights have been earned. “We need to complete the process regarding civil partnership and civil marriage, and we need to get the message across that no fight is lost,” she said. “All fights can be won, sooner or later,” she noted and concluded her message by saying that nothing should disrupt the people’s cohesion, determination, optimism and tenacity. “Next time the parade needs to pass through the parliament.”
