Petrounias Wins First Gold for Greece in European Games

PetrouniasGymnast Lefteris Petrounias was the first Greek to win a gold medal in the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, by placing first in the men’s rings on Saturday.
The 24-year-old world champion managed to edge out Russia’s Nikita Ignatyev, who was seeking a second gold at the inaugural Games.
Petrounias, who was also Greece’s flagcarrier at the opening ceremony last week, collected 15,633 points to leave Ignatyev 300 points behind him.
Greece has also earned a bronze medal, as its women’s water polo team won the third-place playoff against Italy with an 8-7 score on Saturday. Countries were represented on a youth level at this event.
