Cyprus is one of the EU countries with the highest production of solid waste per citizen. It was announced at an event in Nicosia on “The contribution of immigrants from EU countries in the achievement of a viable waste management in Cyprus: The role of effective information and participation at the level of local communities.”
On behalf of the Agriculture Ministry, Athina Papanastasiou said that Cyprus is one of the countries with the highest production of solid waste per citizen, noting that in average Cypriots produce around two kilos of waste per day.
Explaining the various reasons for Cyprus’ lack of adequate waste management, she said that the country has to make extensive efforts to comply with EU regulations and pointed out that Cyprus prepared a new waste management plan and set its quantitative and qualitative objectives. She also urged citizens to be more active toward this direction.
Artemis Paleoyianni from Green Dot Cyprus said that recycling is very important not only for the environment but also for the state, since Cyprus could be obliged to pay a penalty next year. Green Dot Cyprus, she said, is the first packaging and packaging waste management system in Cyprus. She urged citizens to visit their website and become familiar with the categories of waste that are being recycled by this nonprofit organization.
On behalf of the Anakyklos Perivallontiki, also a nonprofit organization, Andri Shiati talked about their objectives.. Before Anakyklos was set up, she said, there was no systematic recycling of clothing in Cyprus. She also explained how clothing is recycled and reused. Anakyklos, she said, also collects handbags, sheets, belts, bed covers, towels and other items.
Taking the floor, Giorgos Kirkos, Project Manager of the program Rethink: Reduce-Reuse-Recycle, which is funded by the EU program LIFE+, talked about the information campaign for the reduction, reuse and recycle of waste. He said that in Cyprus there is a problem with waste management but pointed out that there are tools which can contribute to the reduction of waste through recycling.
He also said that Cypriots and immigrants must be informed about the steps they need to take to the benefit of the environment.
