Dimitris Dimitrakopoulos, Ioanna Faka and Andrianna Balatsouka are three of the Greek students who aced the Panhellenic exams, scoring higher than 19,000 points. The three students spoke with protothema.gr stating that “our generation needs and has to do something better for the country. If we leave, there will be nothing left behind.”
While Greece is plagued by the economic crisis and social impasses are growing, young people in the country are invited to plan their future without being certain that their goals will be met.
Dimitrakopoulos from Thessaloniki, northern Greece, scored 19,510 points on the Panhellenic exams. “I don’t know what university I should choose. I am thinking about medicine but I believe that I would really like to go to a polytechnic school. Due to the crisis, I have to choose a profession that will have prospect and job opening in the future. I want to enjoy my academic life and study something that I like,” he said. “At the moment, I am enjoying the weight that has been lifted after the Panhellenic exams and I am thinking about how to spend my free time over the summer.”
Balatsouka from Karditsa, central Greece, scored 19,230 points. “Young people should not be discouraged by the situation, the economic crisis and the unemployment rates. In a few years we will looking for a job and maybe the conditions will be better then. After all, we are the new generation, and it’s up to us to change the future. We have to try and assert what we want. Through effort and persistence, anything can be accomplished,” she said.
Last but not least, Faka from Larissa, central Greece, also excelled in the exams, scoring a total of 19,010 points. “I hope that I can go to any university I choose and that in four years the country’s situation will have improved. I do not consider studying abroad as an option. I want to stay in my country. Leaving is not a solution because the country is left without any workforce. Who will stay in Greece if all young people decide to leave?” she wondered.
