Hundreds of Greek Police and Fire Dept Vehicles Immobilized Due to Lack of Funds

600775Hundreds of police cars and fire trucks remain immobilized as there are no funds for their repair or replacement, according to Greek Police and Fire Department officials.
The economic crisis has caused significant problems in the daily operation of the Greece’s police and fire department as most vehicles are aging and lack maintenance.
A Greek Police official said that 65-70% of patrol cars and motorcycles are grounded because there are no funds to repair them. At the same time, Greek Fire Department officials said that 35-40% of vehicles are out of operation.
Most vehicles are over 15 years old, averaging 350 to 450 thousand kilometers, while those who are under 15 years old have covered 200 to 300 thousand kilometers.
A police officer said that about 3,000 old vehicles were dismantled last year in order to get spare parts and replace parts of operating vehicles.
Fuel cost is another parameter, since 5,500 patrol cars of the Greek Police have high capacity engines and combined with the vehicles’ age means high fuel consumption and increased daily operating costs.
In the Fire Department, the approximately 3,000-strong fleet is aged and fuel cost is also high since they all run on petrol and have frequent malfunctions.
