While Greek citizens are trying to remain calm amidst the chaotic situation in the country, after the imposition of capital controls, foreign media are constantly providing advice to tourists planning their vacation in Greece.
On Tuesday, June 30, BBC published an article answering a series of question that tourists may have regarding how much money they need to have on them, if they can used their credit and debit cards, or if they will lose their deposits in case the trip is cancelled. Without raising fears the British network made it clear that tourists using cards issued by foreign banks will be able to make regular withdrawals. Furthermore, BBC added that Greece continues to offer great deals for travelers.
On Wednesday CNN warned tourists to carry a lot of cash with them, noting that “although ATMs are working, it isn’t guaranteed cash will be in them.” These warnings were based on stories of two Texans who stated to the American network that they could not find any ATMs with cash.
Meanwhile, the Business Insider announced that Greece is bankrupt and the people are continuously withdrawing money from bank, due to the panicked atmosphere. “The Greek Embassy has been sending out emails reassuring people it’s safe for tourists to visit despite the current bailout crisis,” added the article.
On Thursday, the British Guardian published an article about how reservations to Greek destinations have significantly decreased, not only because of the capital controls, but also because of the large number of migrants and refugees who arrive on the country’s islands.
“The tourism industry contributes about 16% of Greece’s GDP and almost 20% of its jobs, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council,” noted the Guardian.
Furthermore, in another article the British newspaper noted that tour operators are not currently offering the option of refunds, or date changes.
