Numerous Greeks Applying for Passports

greek-passportSeveral wealthy Greek families in the northern and southern suburbs of Athens started preparing to leave the country, as soon as the capital controls were imposed.
Over the last few days, the passport issuing offices of the Greek police have received numerous applications from citizens in Kifissia, Ekali, Filothei, and Psychico, northern Athens suburbs. Meanwhile, the police stations in the southern suburbs, have also experienced a 50% increase in applications, compared to the same period last year.
Most applications are for minors, children of wealthy families that are younger than 14 years old and therefore cannot issue an ID card for traveling and need a passport even within Europe.
“The queues outside the passport offices in the northern and southern suburbs of Attica are unprecedented. This gives us the impression that wealthy families want to be ready leave, depending on the country’s situation,” noted a police officers.
It was reported that a total of 1,800 passport application were submitted in Kifissia and Ekali, Athens in the past week, mostly for children. During the same period last year, there were approximately 800 applications submitted.
Furthermore, after the referendum results were officially announced, 2,000 passport applications were submitted in both suburbs, indicating that many people believe that the country will eventually declare bankruptcy.
However, this situation has created a major problem for Greek police at the Directorate of Passport Issuance, given the lack of staff, thereby forcing officers to work around the clock to face the storm of applications.
