New Democracy Leader Meimarakis to Hold Meeting on the Party's Future Leadership

meimarakisNew Democracy caretaker leader Evangelos Meimarakis will soon address the matter of the party’s future leadership, according to reports.
Following Antonis Samaras’s resignation, Meimarakis, a long-time New Democracy MP who has served as Minister of Defence, has avoided publicly discussing the future of the party’s leadership and has instead focused on urging the Greek government to make a deal with international creditors and prevent a Grexit.
“Kathimerini” reported that following the second bailout vote in the Greek parliament on Wednesday, Meimarakis will convene the party’s political committee to discuss New Democracy’s future leadership as well as the possibility of snap elections.
According to the same sources, the caretaker leader could suggest that the party initiate a formal election with new candidates that will produce the new leader. Meimarakis could also suggest that the party allow him to keep his leadership position for the next few months.
On Wednesday July 22 the Greek Parliament will vote on a second piece of bailout legislation. With Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras ruling with a weakened administration and after 38 SYRIZA MPs did not support the terms of the bailout deal, snap elections in the fall are a possibility for Greece.
