190 Migrants Arrive Safely in Sitia, Crete

illegal-migrantsA group of 190 illegal migrants, who had been sailing in a rudderless ship near the Greek island of Karpathos, were safely collected and transferred to Sitia, Crete on a freighter. They arrived at the port early in the morning of Wednesday, July 22.
The Greek coastguards organized an operation to rescue and collect the migrants, when they received an emergency signal. The operation included men of the National Search and Rescue Centre, as well as five ships and a freighter.
According to reports, all migrants are all in good health, while 60 children, four pregnant women and several elderly were found among them. The coastguards conducted an investigation but they were unable to identify the traffickers.
Local authorities are on high alert in order to provide medical assistance, while they have not yet found a place for the migrants to be accommodated.
