Greek Forum of Refugees: '43 Families Living in Tents in Athens'

refugeesThere are currently 43 refugee families living in tents pitched in the Pedion tou Areos park in central Athens, the organization Greek Forum of Refugees said on Friday. Releasing the figures found during a count carried out on Wednesday and Thursday, the group reported that 202 people in total were living in the park, including 103 children, 62 men and 37 women.
Furthermore, following orders by the Greek Health Minister, members of the National Health Operations Centre (EKEPY) visited the park in order to perform health checks on the refugees. The EKEPY team, consisting of four specialists and a nurse, found no serious health problems with any of the people living in the Athenian park and provided help for any minor health issues.
Furthermore, Doctors of the World social workers also visited the refugees, informing about their rights and the authorities they can appeal to, stressing the risks of staying in the park, especially for the more vulnerable groups (women, infants and young children).
“We are seeking solutions for the situation, so that Pedion tou Areos does not turn into a refugee camp, which would be unhealthy for these people. We are trying to finalize a reception center. An urgent matter since the more refugees are constantly arriving on the Greek islands and then traveling to Athens, in their journey towards other European countries,” noted Attica region spokesman Andreas Theologou.
