Greek PM Tsipras Criticizes Party Dissidents

Tsipras_kokkinoGreek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras gave an interview to “Sto Kokkino” radio station on Wednesday afternoon where he discussed the divisions within his party and the agreement he made with international creditors.
Tsipras said that although he does not want to hold elections, that will depend on whether he has the support of his SYRIZA parliamentary group. While he said he respects those within the party who have a different strategy to his, he finds it surreal that members express their support for the government but don’t vote for the proposals it brings forward.
The Prime Minister spoke out against those who want the government to step down due to their opposition to the new agreement.
“With some of the comrades, we gave battles and sat at the same table, anxious that a bank’s collapse could lead to political catastrophe, just a few days before the agreement,” he said. “We fought the battle of the referendum while knowing the alternatives. Now, the same people say that since it is guaranteed that there will not be any bank closings, you should vote the deal and we will maintain our political purity.”
In regards to the July 5 referendum, Tsipras argued that he had no choice but to call it. He also argued that the “No” result was not a mandate to lead the country out of the euro.
Tsipras guaranteed that the government will implement the reforms regardless of whether he agrees with them or not.
He further noted that he believes international creditors will restructure Greece’s debt following an agreement.
“What is crucial is that we got a commitment for debt relief, which will take place after the first review of the program in November,” he said.
Tsipras also denied that he had claimed before the elections that once he assumed office he would rip the Memoranda with one law.
The Prime Minister recognized that a Grexit is still a possibility.
