'Liveability' in Athens Ranks Lowest in Eurozone Due to Economic Crisis

ellada-anergia-oikonomiki-krisi“Liveability” in Athens has ranked the lowest among Eurozone member states as quality of living in the city have decreased by six percentage points in the last five years.
Athens’ liveability dropped to 75.3 percent in the index from the 77.5 percent it scored last year. Greece’s capital also dropped to 72nd place compared to the 69th place it was last year, in a total of 140 cities.
The Economist Intelligence Unit measures yearly the liveability of a city based on five important factors: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.
The economic crisis has made Athens the only Eurozone city with a liveability index less than 80. According to the EIU, employees who work in such a city are entitled to extra financial allowance by their employers.
Athens joins other cities that have suffered steep declines in liveability over the last five years such as Damascus, Tripoli, Tunis, Cairo and Bahrain, as well as Detroit, which declared bankruptcy in 2013.
Melbourne is the best city to live in the world for the fifth year running, with a score of 97.5 out of 100, followed by Vienna, with 97.4, and Canada’s Vancouver in third place with 97.3.
