Foreign Media Reports After Greek PM Announces Resignation

Tsipras2The recent rapid developments in Greece have already brought the country back into the spotlight of international media attention. The Daily Telegraph, the Guardian and Bild were published today with their front page dedicated to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his decision to lead the country to a snap election.
“Tsipras quits, plunging Greece into new crisis,” noted the Daily Telegraph in the title of its newest article on the Greek issue.
The Guardian wrote that Tsipras stepped down to trigger new elections. The article also stressed that while the Greek Prime Minister is still popular with the people, the country is still crippled by its debt.
German tabloid Bild posed several questions regarding the Greek Prime Minister’s intention. “Didn’t he have enough? He probably didn’t,” noted the article. Meanwhile, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung spoke of a tactical retreat. The German newspaper expressed the belief that Tsipras is leading the country to snap elections to strengthen his power, pointing out that a hasty election would turn out to his advantage, since it weakens other parties’ pre-election campaigns.
The article concluded that there is high probability that Tsipras will win the election and maintain his “harsh” stance toward the country’s creditors.
“Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras Resigns, Clearing Way for Elections in Bid to Uphold Bailout Deal,” read a Wall Street Journal article. The Independent also published an article about Tsipras’ resignation, noting that “the Prime Minister effectively lost his parliamentary majority after a rebellion by hardliners in his SYRIZA party who oppose a bailout agreement struck with international lenders.”
