German Chancellor Merkel: Tsipras Stepping Down is Part of the Solution

tsipras-merkelAfter Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced his resignation and called for snap elections, German Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly commented that “Tsipras stepping down is part of the solution.”
According to a Telegraph report, Merkel is on official visit to Brazil for meetings with President Dilma Rousseff.
When the Brazilian President talked to reporters, she said that Merkel told her that “Tsipras stepping down is part of the solution, not part of the crisis,” according to The Telegraph.
Meanwhile, the European Commission urged Greece to stick to its commitment to reform its economy.
“It is crucial that Greece maintains its commitments to the Eurozone,” said Eurogroup President and Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem.
“I recall the broad support in the Greek parliament for the new program and reform package and I hope the elections will lead to even more support in the new Greek parliament. Hopefully, these elections will take place relatively soon so Greece can take important next steps in October, as foreseen,” he added.
“Swift elections in Greece can be a way to broaden support for ESM stability support programme just signed by PM Tsipras on behalf of Greece,” tweeted Martin Selmayr, the chief-of-staff to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Finnish Finance Minister says Greek election won’t affect bailout

Finland does not believe that Greek government’s resignation will have an impact on the country’s new bailout program, Finance Minister Alexander Stubb said.
“We assume that whatever the government, this new deal and its conditions will remain. Regardless the election, Greece’s problems will not disappear,” Stubb told Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
