Greek Main Opposition Slams Tsipras for Refusing to Meet with Party Leader

meimarakisGreekĀ main opposition New Democracy accused Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of having an “authoritarian approach” on Sunday, following his refusal to meet with New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis in his attempt to form a government and avoid snap elections.
“The meetings of political leaders in the framework of exploratory mandates are institutional and constitutional, and aim, among others, at diffusing political tensions. They are not friendly or social meetings,” New DemocracyĀ said in a statement.
“For months now, Tsipras is behaving likeĀ an authoritarian. He decides by himself for very serious issues on the countryā€™s future and when he realizes the negative effects of his actions, he presents himself as a victim of blackmail. NowĀ he chooses old, condemned practices of polarization,” the party added.
New Democracy also said the efforts for a better future require dialog, consensus and wider coalitions between political forces and this is why party leader Meimarakis wanted to meet with the Prime Minister. TsiprasĀ replied, however, that “he didnā€™t want to see him.”
