Olympiacos to Play in Champions League Despite Match-Fixing Allegations

ÓÏÕÐÅÑËÉÃÊÁ / ÏÓÖÐ - ÊÁËËÏÍÇ / SUPERLEAGUE / OLYMPIAKOS - KALONI / ÖÉÅÓÔÁ ÐÑÙÔÁÈËÇÌÁÔÏÓUEFA said that Olympiacos Piraeus FC will play in Champions League despite match-fixing allegations by rivals Panathinaikos, who appealed to CAS.
Olympiacos will be on Thursday’s draw for the Champions League groups after football’s highest court, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, rejected an appeal by arch rivals Panathinaikos. According to Panathinaikos, Olympiacos’ President Vangelis Marinakis was involved in domestic match-fixing.
Panathinaikos, league runner-up last season, had challenged a UEFA appeals body decision in June that allowed the Greek champions to play in Champions League. UEFA said that “neither the Hellenic Football Federation nor the criminal courts in Athens have rendered any final decision against Mr. Marinakis or the club.”
According to UEFA, the “provisional admission” of Olympiacos was confirmed on Monday by CAS.
UEFA rules say that if any match-fixing allegations since 2007 are proven, the club involved will be barred from its competitions.
Panathinaikos was hoping that the club would take Olympiacos’ place in the Champions League group stage. The Athens club was eliminated in the Champions League qualifying rounds by Belgium’s Club Brugge.
