(EUROKINISSI/ÃÉÁÍÍÇÓ ÐÁÍÁÃÏÐÏÕËÏÓ)Greece’s departing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday handed over his seat to interim Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou as the country goes to elections on September 20.
Alexis Tsipras welcomed newly sworn-in Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou in his office at Maximos Mansion on Thursday evening in a handover ceremony. Tsipras stated that he will do everything he can so that elections are held in a “civilized” environment.
“I’m delighted to welcome you because I welcome the first female prime minister in the history of Greek democracy. I am sure that both you and the caretaker government you will appoint tomorrow will do your best. I wanted to wish you the best. I will do everything possible to hold elections in a civilized environment,” Tsipras told Thanou in their first face-to-face meeting.
On her side, Thanou said that although the main role of a caretaker government is to hold elections, it may need to take action on ongoing crises such as migration. “The caretaker government, as everyone knows, has as its main role to conduct fair elections. But I believe that this government will be called to address crucial issues, such as migration,” Thanou replied, adding that her government will do all they can to carry out their responsibilities in the best possible way.
