In a total of 70 search and rescue operations, Greek coastal authorities picked up 2,492 people from the sea. The operations took place off the islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Kos, Symi, Farmakonissi and Agathonissi from Friday morning until Monday morning.
The number of refugees from war-torn Syria and Afghanistan and migrants from poorer countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa is rapidly increasing on a daily basis as hundreds of thousands have already reached Europe through Greece and Italy.
Hundreds of thousands more are waiting along the coasts of Turkey for the dangerous journey away from war and poverty.
Once in Greece, refugees from Syria are registered as asylum seekers and from there they can move to the country of their choice.
