Greek Elections: Tsipras Agrees to Debate with New Democracy Leader

tsipras111111Former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said that the “No” atĀ the July referendum expressed the indignation of the Greek people and that he accepts the challenge to have a public debate with New Democracy leaderĀ Evangelos Meimarakis.
Tsipras spoke at the SYRIZA Nationwide Conference on Sunday evening and said that the 62% of the people who voted “No” atĀ the referendum expressed their frustration and indignation of what is happening in Greek politics in the past 62 years.
“We are given the chance to put an end to melancholy. We are here and we are standing tall, ready for battle, to not allow the return of the old establishmentĀ disguising as the quiet power. If the old establishment returns, it will do so under the worst conditions,” Tsipras said.
“We must campaign acrossĀ GreeceĀ and not allow the past to return in Greece,” he said, adding: “From now on, I am forced to use the language of war. There is no doubt that the wish of the old establishment is to make the Left a parenthesis, a seven-month parenthesis that will wash away the sins of 40 years.”
“Our opponents try to cloud our political messages. They try to convey the message that “we are all the same,” Tsipras said, adding that “for forty years they created a corrupt state,” but, “the sins of 40 years cannot be compared to seven months of SYRIZA rule.”
Tsipras accepts debate with New Democracy leader
During his speech, Tsipras said that he accepts the challenge for a television debate withĀ New DemocracyĀ leaderĀ Meimarakis.
“We accept as many debates as they want, wherever they want them… We never tried to hide,” he said.
Regarding the SYRIZA list of candidates, which has not been completed yet, Tsipras called on regional party members to find leftist candidates who are righteous and honest. He said that there are already upstanding Greeks who applied to be on the candidate list.
The party leader further said that he wants people who will be party soldiers and not ambitious politicians who just want to be elected.
Finally,Ā he called on those who disagree with him that in the next four years the Left will be judged on whether they can change things in Greece or all they can do is denounce things.
