Clashes Between Police and Migrants in Lesvos as European Commission Pledges Immediate Assistance to Greece

avramopoulosDuring a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou on Saturday, European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos said that 33 million euros will be given to Greece by September 15 to help the country deal with the ongoing refugee crisis.
“From then on, the provision of the remaining funds, as well as of those (funds) that are necessary for the solution of the urgent situation that has occurred, will continue,” he added.
The United Nations had estimated that Greece had almost 200,000 migrants and refugees enter its borders in 2015. The European Commission had approved a total of 473 million euros to be given to Greece over time by 2020, earlier in August.
Tension in Lesvos
The fragile atmosphere continues to boil in the east Aegean island of Lesvos as migrants and refugees collided with police officers on Saturday.
The latest episode occurred at the island’s reception center. According to Greek media reports, the refugees and migrants staying there blocked the entrance of the center and then threw rocks at police upon their arrival. There have not been reports of any injuries from this incident.
