4,500 Migrants and Refugees to Arrive in Piraeus by Thursday Evening

Approximately 4,500 migrants and refugees that were on the East Aegean island of Lesvos will arrive at the port of Piraeus during Thursday according to the Athens Macedonian News Agency. The Eleftherios Venizelos passenger ship is scheduled to arrive in the early afternoon with 2,487 migrants and refugees, while Blue Star Patmos is transporting another 2,000 people who will arrive late Thursday evening.
Greek alternate Migration minister Giannis Mouzalas argued during an interview with SKAI TV Network on Wednesday that 17-20% of the people that arrive on the Greek islands are illegal migrants.
The Athens Macedonian News Agency further noted that the Greek Coast Guard rescued 235 people during five search missions in the past 24 hours that were conducted close to the islands of Chios, Limnos, and Samos, all of which are located in the East Aegean Sea.
Kathimerini newspaper notes that the European Commission will provide 11 million euros in emergency funds to the Greek police, Greek coast guard, and the First Reception Service; that provides for the reception of developing country nationals who are illegal entrants, in accordance with the international obligations of the country to better deal with the refugee crisis. The Greek police will receive 2.5 million euros, the coast guard 4 million euros, and the First Reception Service 4.5 million euros respectively.
