Greek Elections: New Diametrically Opposed Poll Results Add Suspense

electionsNine days before the Greek elections and two new opinion polls show different results as one has SYRIZA leading by five percentage points, while the other has New Democracy ahead by one percent.
In a poll conducted by Pro Rata for Efimerida ton Syntakton daily, the Alexis Tsipras party has a five-point comfortable lead over New Democracy with 28.5 percent against 23.5 percent. The same research company had SYRIZA ahead by 3.5 percent a month ago.
The Pro Rata poll shows Golden Dawn as third political power in Greece with 6.5 percent of participants saying they would vote for the extreme rightist party. Fourth place is shared by the Greek Communist Party (KKE) and the PASOK-DIMAR collaboration with both getting 4.5 percent of potential voters.
To Potami (The River) follows at 4 percent, while the Centrist Union gathers an impressive 3.5 percent. Former junior coalition partner Independent Greeks (ANEL) is in danger of not entering the new parliament with only 2.5 percent of potential voters. SYRIZA offshoot Popular Unity gets the same percentage as ANEL.
In another opinion poll conducted on the internet by graduate students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the period August 31-September 2, the conservative party leads with 24.6 percent while SYRIZA follows at 23.6 percent. Again, Golden Dawn is third with a higher (8.4) percentage.
In this poll, Popular Unity is at 7.5 percent followed by KKE at 4.8 percent. To Potami is close behind with 4.6 percent of voters preference. The Centrist Union is even higher in this poll at 4.2 percent.
PASOK-DIMAR fare lower in this poll with only 3.7 percent of potential voters, while 1.8 percent of participants said they would vote for ANEL.
