Greek FinMin Christodoulakis Urges Business World to Invest in Greece

Nikos ChristodoulakisGreek Finance Minister Nikos Christodoulakis invited the business world to participate actively in the country’s effort to complete investments totaling up to 100 billion euros by 2020, during a speech at a debate organized by the Athens Chamber of Commerce and the Greek business federation; SEV, on Thursday.

The minister said the country needs a “jump in investments” noting that the main question is where the government will find the money. In an effort to respond to this question, he said, he announced he plans to negotiate with the European Commission for the extension of existing EU programs by 6 to 12 months. He also seeks to negotiate an increase in EU funding, citing the deep economic crisis facing the country.
Commenting on a possible loosening of the current rules associated with capital controls on imports, he said that the government is discussing a full lifting of the capital controls that have been placed on pharmaceutical products and a few other products, but noted that this issue will have to be discussed with the European Central Bank, which will happen in the near future.
