EU Approves Military Action Against People Smugglers in Greek Waters

f55e21d0-14ba-42b4-ba42-67df6992afe7European Union member states on Monday approved to take military action against people smugglers in the Mediterranean Sea, in order to tackle the migrant issue.
Under the new decision, the operation can stop and if necessary destroy boats people smugglers use to transfer refugees and migrants to Greece and Italy.
Meanwhile, Austria and Slovakia followed Germany in imposing border controls, thereby suspending the Schengen Treaty obligations. Austria also decided to employ the military in order to deal with the influx, sending 2,200 troops to its borders with Hungary. Poland is ready to close its borders, while Belgium also considers doing the same.
“We will make sure that this very day we reach conclusions to ensure that Europe can have its borders respected. Concretely, that means registration centers in Greece, Italy and Hungary to avoid what is happening today,” said French President Francois Hollande ahead of the EU summit on the refugee issue.
