Greek Unemployment Rate Decreases Slightly in 2015 Second Trimester

unemploymentThe Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced on Thursday that the Greek unemployment rate fell to 24.6% in the second trimester of 2015, from 26.6% in the year’s first trimester.
By the end of this year’s second trimester 1,180,441 people were jobless while 3,625,545 individuals were employed.
“The percentage of unemployed who have never worked in the past is 23.5% of the total unemployed, while the long-term unemployed (those who have been looking for work for more than 12 months, regardless of whether they have worked in the past), compose 73.1% (of all the unemployed),” the report notes.
Unemployment rates between females and males showed a significance disparity, with the former being 28.3% while the later 21.5%. Unemployment rates of individuals aged between 15 and 24 remain high at 49.5%.
Despite the slight reduction in the unemployment rate, the vast majority of those without work have been jobless for more than one year.
ELSTAT data also highlights the continuing dominance of the tertiary sector in the Greek economy, which includes 72.1% of all those who are employed. The secondary sector employs 14.9% of the employed while the remaining 13% work in the primary sector.
