Greek Coast Guard Search for 26 Refugees Missing, Bulgaria Shuts Borders

migrants_LesbosThe Hellenic Coast Guard announced that 26 refugees of unknown nationality are still missing after their boat sank off the island of Lesvos.
So far the rescue operations have pulled 20 people out of the water. “They [the migrants] told rescuers there were 46 people in the inflatable dinghy in total,” a coast guard spokeswoman said.
The incident occurred only days after several asylum-seekers, including a five-year-old Syrian girl, lost their lives in the choppy waters between the Turkish coast and the nearby Greek islands. The Greek islands are the main entry point for refugees and migrants from war-torn Syria and Afghanistan.
Bulgaria shuts borders to refugee influx
Meanwhile, Bulgaria has closed its borders to Greece, Turkey and FYROM to stop refugees from entering the country.
“Currently we have 111 military officers deployed at different points along the Bulgarian borders to Turkey, Greece and FYROM,” Bulgarian Minister of Defense Nikolay Nenchev said speaking on Bulgarian television (bTV).
“We commission the army to the border in order to secure logistic support. There are very difficult and hardly accessible regions, which cannot be crossed with the equipment available to the Border Police,” Nenchev explained.
