German Chancellor Says Greece Cannot Cope Alone in Protecting its Border

merkelGerman Chancellor Angela Merkel asserted that Turkey must assist Greece in protecting the European Union country’s borders.
The United Nations Refugee Agency estimated on Sunday that more than 318,000 migrants and refugees have traveled to Greece since the beginning of 2015.
Merkel, speaking during a joint press conference with Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila, expressed her conviction that despite the difficulty of the situation the European Union will rise to the occasion and act accordingly, Kathimerini newspaper reports. The protection of the countries’ borders is important to this end, she further noted.
“We have to see the reasons behind the flight of these people. But I think fear is not a good consultant. Globalization means that conflicts that seem far away have effects on us as well,” she said.
Merkel noted that after dealing with the immediate priority and providing refuge with decency to the people who need it, the EU must begin examining ways to help countries outside the EU develop and ensure their observation of human rights laws.
Both Merkel and Sipila advocated in favor of “hot spots” in Greece and Italy. “Hot Spots” will be locations where representatives of European agencies such as Frontex will help Greek authorities register and identify the newly-arrived migrants and refugees. A hot spot is expected to be established at the port of Piraeus.
A European Union Summit on the Refugee Crisis will convene on Wednesday.
