Rodopi Region in Northern Greece Elects 3 Muslim MPs

ResizerThe constituency of Rodopi Region in northern Greece is left without Christian representatives as the three parliamentary seats went to Muslim MPs.

Former New Democracy lawmaker Euripides Stylianidis who represented the Christian population of the region, lost to the two SYRIZA Muslim MPs. The third seat of the region also went to a Muslim, Potami’s Ilhan Ahmet.

Now the Rodopi region is represented by three Muslim lawmakers, Ahmet and the SYRIZA MPs Moustoufa Mustafa and Ayhan Karagiousouf.

Despite the fact that the SYRIZA percentage of votes fell from 48.53 percent in the January election to 39.51 percent on Sunday, the party clinched two parliamentary seats.

On the contrary, the Potami candidate received 1,800 more votes compared to the January election.

At the same time, while New Democracy fared better in this election — 22.67 percent compared to 20.56 percent in January — the party finally lost the seat.

Potami’s Ahmet was previously with New Democracy and is popular with the Rodopi Muslim constituency.
