refugees_lesvos_twins_toyAmid the recurring phenomena of shipwrecks and rescue operations in the Aegean Sea, a different story has emerged in Lesvos.
A Syrian couple making the long a journey from Syria into Europe, took with them their eight month-old twin children. According to Greek and foreign media reports and pictures that have surfaced, the family arrived safely at the East Aegean island of Lesvos on Tuesday.
Lesvos is still one of the main entry points for seaborne migrants and refugees looking to enter Europe through Greece. This trip for these twins and their parents is particularly dangerous as can be seen by the large number of shipwrecks that occur on a daily basis.
The Associated Press reported on Monday that between Friday and Monday morning the Greek Coast Guard had conducted 42 rescue operations of capsized boats transporting migrants and refugees to Greece. During these operations, 994 people were rescued. On Saturday a five year old girl who was travelling to Greece from Turkey drowned in the Aegean Sea after the boat she was on overturned.
