Migrants and Refugees Leave Lesvos Island As Thousands More Arrive

migrants-el-venizelosThe East Aegean Greek island of Lesvos is currently caught between mass departures and arrivals of migrants and refugees.
In the past day, the port of Piraeus has been the scene of yet another major wave of migrant and refugee arrivals. Five thousand people who were transported from the Greek islands, disembarked at Greece’s biggest port between Tuesday and Wednesday.
The “Eleftherios Venizelos” passenger ship had transported 2,477 of those from Lesvos on Wednesday morning. Two other ferries transported the remaining migrants and refugees, also from Lesvos, with 1,300 arriving with the “Ariadne” ship on Wednesday and 1,922 with the Blue Star Ferry Patmos on Tuesday, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
Despite this seemingly large exodus from the island, Lesvos had another massive influx on Wednesday morning with approximately 2,500 migrants and refugees arriving at the island, according to Greek media reports.
Last week around 30,000 migrants and refugees had been transported from Lesvos to mainland Greece.
ANA-MPA reported earlier Wednesday that food provision to migrants and refugees at the island’s Moria reception center had stopped.
A European Union Summit on the Refugee Crisis will take place on Wednesday in Brussels.
