President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said we must be resolved to give the fight for the salvation of the country, while addressing on Friday evening an event by the Federation of Cypriot American Organizations, in New York.
During an official dinner, honoring US Senator Charles Schumer, President Anastasiades referred to ongoing settlement talks in Cyprus, acknowledging that there is progress in some areas, while there are also problems.
He also praised Archbishop Demetrios of America and the leadership of the Cypriot American and Greek American communities for their fight for Cyprus.
“I share with you the same vision and I have fought and I will continue to fight in order to see our country reunited and free from Turkish troops” the President said.
He noted ongoing efforts to create a country which will be on the same footing with other EU member states and where human rights and basic liberties will be safeguarded.
Thus, he noted people from Karavas or Kyrenia – both cities located in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus – will be able to freely move around and reside. The President said he could not expand on the subject.
“On behalf of Cyprus, the government and its people, I would like to express my deep and sincere gratitude for promoting our just cause to end the anachronistic division of our country, through, your network of relationships and alliances both inside Congress, the Senate and the US Administration” the President noted.
Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos warned of the danger of complacency in the international community, due to high expectations coupled with an underlying fatigue in part of world public opinion.
In a message, that was read at the event by the permanent representative of Greece to the UN, Pavlopoulos said that we must remain alert, in order to avoid reaching a settlement in Cyprus that is not mutually agreed or viable in the long-term.
Responding to the latter to this reference, President Anastasiades said that “there is no fatigue for fights of this kind”. He also said that it was not his intention to mislead people by creating false expectations. “We have embarked on a fresh dialogue. I must say that there is progress in some areas, as well as problems” the President noted.
From his part, Archbishop Demetrios noted the leadership of honoree Charles Schumer and the support he puts behind just causes.
He referred to the Cyprus problem, noting the need to enlighten public opinion and spoke favorably of Cyprus` First Lady, Andri Anastasiades, for setting up a fellowship fund for students.
