Video: PM Tsipras and President Xi Jinping Discuss Greece – China Relations at UN

Following a busy day of encounters and conversations with national leaders, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras met with the PresidentĀ of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping in the context of the United Nations annual General Assembly Debate.
President Xi Jinping congratulated PM Tsipras and spoke of the historic relations of the two countries. He also said that China will continue supporting Greece.
The Greek Prime Minister said that his government had worked towards building an evenĀ better relationship with China and that he intends to continue on the same path after his reelection.
Relations between Greece and China have intensifiedĀ in the past few years as Chinese state-owned shipping services company COSCO is among the three remaining contestants competing for a majority stake of the portĀ of Piraeus, Greece’s larges port.
Piraeus Container Terminal S.A., a COSCO subsidiary, alsoĀ manages the portĀ of Piraeus’s Piers II and III, on a 30 year lease contract that expires in 2039. The company has been waiting to expand its operations on the port.
