Athens Mayor Calls For Empty Military Camps to Host Migrants and Refugees

kaminisAthens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis discussed the potential for a new reception center in Athens, while also during an interview with SKAI.
Kaminis warned that the Victoria Square in the center of Athens must not become a refugee settlement again. Thousands of migrants and refugees have been camping at the Victoria Square over the past month. From Kaminis’ standpoint, it is up to the Greek government to handle this refugee crisis.
“I am faced with a government. This government has a responsibility to be solidary and its members are obliged to be solidary to each other and to have a common policy,” he said.
The Athenian mayor claimed that the city of Athens is willing to offer a new location to build a second reception center. The first one is the Elaionas reception center, which opened in August. However, his precondition is that the migrants and refugees are evacuated from Athens’s squares.
“There are empty military camps, and I don’t want anyone to deceive me by telling me that they need to be repaired first. We will go and install large military tents, we will install hygiene facilities, we, along with others, will take on the provision of food for these people,” the mayor claimed after noting that it is unacceptable for empty military camps to go unused in the face of this crisis.
