Despite the fact that many Greeks show great compassion during the ongoing refugee influx, a Pew Research Center survey shows that Greeks in general see immigrants as a burden.
The survey was conducted in seven European countries and the U.S.A. and the results show that Greece ranks last in friendliness and positive view of immigrants. Italy comes very close second.
Seven in ten Greeks view immigrants as “a burden on our country because they take our jobs and social benefits.” Only 19 percent said they are a strength “because of their work and talents.”
According to the survey, Germans, the British and U.S. citizens hold the most positive views of immigrants.
Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. It is based in Washington D.C. and was established in 2004.
