IMF Chief and Greek Economy Minister Discuss Bailout but No Debt Haircut

sunantisi-lagkarnt---stathaki-xwris-antikrisma.w_lInternational Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde sent the message to Athens that any official discussion on Greek debt easing will take place after the first bailout program review.
The IMF chief met with Greek Economy Minister Giorgos Stathakis in Washington on Tuesday and discussed Greece’s third bailout program. Poul Thomsen, Director of the IMF’s European Department, was present at the meeting.

The IMF officials clarified that the purpose of the meeting was for the two sides to get acquainted and it does not signify the beginning of any kind of negotiation.
According to information from the Fund, Lagarde notified Stathakis that the IMF has the intention to cooperate with Greek authorities on the implementation of reforms required by the third bailout program.
The Greek minister reiterated Athens’ commitment to fulfill its obligations in implementing fully the bailout program.
Regarding the timeline of the first review, Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos has estimated that, based on the plan of reform implementation, the first review will take place at the end of November.
So far the IMF has not committed to contribute financially to the bailout program. However, the organization will contribute funds under the conditions that Europe would write off part of the debt and Greece to implement fully the reforms required for economic recovery.
