Three New Democracy Presidency Candidates at Starting Line

diadoxh_new dimocrasyThe deadline for declaring candidacy for New Democracy president has closed with three candidates taking place at the starting line, while the fourth missed the deadline by eight minutes.
Vangelis Meimarakis looks the one more likely to win the race since he led the party during the election campaign managing to avoid losses. Meimarakis, who took over the helm in the summer when party chief Antonis Samaras resigned did fairly well in the debate with Alexis Tsipras and represents the old guard of the conservative party.
Former minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced his candidacy saying that he represents the new blood in the party while slamming interim leader Meimarakis for leading the party to “stagnation” if elected. The son of Constantinos Mitsotakis carries the name of his former prime minister father who has not been very popular among Greek people.
Central Macedonia Governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas is also “new blood” and has promised to unite all party supporters and turn New Democracy into a party that would represent all people of Greece. He said that Greek society is not going through a crisis but it is on decline because there is a “lack of vision.”
Former minister Adonis Georgiadis collected the 50 votes required at the last minute but his candidacy was not accepted because he missed the 6:00 pm deadline by arriving at the party headquarters at 6:08 pm. The committee’s decline to accept him is criticized by New Democracy members. Georgiadis’ outspoken persona has won him many friends but also more sworn enemies within Greek society for his right-wing views. He is very active in promoting the party views, but at the same time he does it in a rather loud way that doesn’t appeal to all.
The conservative party has lost three consecutive elections to SYRIZA and is stigmatized for bringing the austerity-ladden bailout deal of 2012. The leadership issue is of great importance for the party in trying to regroup and regain its might.
