Greek Businessman Jailed After Testimony on Ericsson Bribe Scandal

Thomas LiakounakosGreek businessman Thomas Liakounakos was sent to jail pending trial on Friday after a seven-hour testimony on his role in Swedish telecom Ericsson’s cash-for-contracts scandal before an investigative magistrate on corruption.
Liakounakos, who acted as a commercial agent for Ericsson at the time the deal was made in 1999, was summoned as a suspect for bribery and money-laundering. He is accused of paying a bribe of up to 2 million euros to a Greek official to secure the deal for the airborne surveillance system Erieye, worth about 540 million euros.
