Greek Government Could Be Imposing a Single Property Tax on Property Abroad

The Greek government is planning to impose a single property tax, ENFIA, on property that Greek citizens own overseas, according to Vima newspaper.
The reported taxation would be introduced in 2016 and would not concern Greeks who live abroad permanently. Greek authorities would add the value of the property abroad to any properties an owner holds inside of Greece to produce the final tax payment the property owner in question must make to the Greek state.
Greek property holders would not be burdened with the additional tax if the taxation in the country where the property is located is higher than the ENFIA, the report notes.
This levy on foreign property would also help Greek authorities trace potential tax evasion by Greek citizens.
