French President Hopes Talks on Greek Debt Will Begin

French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel addressed the European Parliament on Wednesday, with the French President dedicating some of his time to Greece.
Hollande argued that during negotiations with Greece for a new bailout program, Europe did not assume its responsibilities toward the Greek government and promoted failed talks.
“We deserted a nation whose culture still illuminates us,” Hollande said and added “Alexis Tsipras was very brave and wanted to consult with his people before agreeing.”
The French president directly spoke on the issue of Greece’s debt, expressing his hope that a discussion on the matter will begin with the ultimate goal of settling the issue completely.
Debt relief for Greece has been called for by the Greek government as well as by other nations and institutions. Most notably, the Intentional Monetary Fund has called for Greek debt restructuring since July. Germany has refused to consider deb restructuring but has noted it is open to having a discussion about some forms of debt relief. The IMF’s on its part has refused to participate in the new Greek bailout until Greece gets some kind of debt relief.
Consensus, at least on the initiation of a discussion on debt relief for Greece, seems to be building among European officials. Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem said on Monday, that following the completion of a first review of the Greek bailout, which is expected to happen soon, a discussion on debt easing for Greece could be opened.
