Greek Alternate Finance Minister Targets Large Scale Tax Evasion

alexiadisCombating large-scale tax evasion is a priority for the government, Alternate Finance Minister Tryfon Alexiadis said on Thursday.
In a television interview, Alexiadis said there were currently around 25,000 tax evasion cases with an estimated average tax of 600,000 euros each, of which less than 1,500 have been inspected.
“We do not want to focus mainly on small and medium-sized tax evasion. We move towards copying the operation of European tax agencies which focus mainly on large-scale tax evasion,” Alexiadis said.
He also claimed he plans to bring forward a piece of legislation that will allow for Greeks to voluntarily declare unreported income that they have overseas. Alexiadis noted that in this case, one of the policies that is being examined is that tax evasion charges are not made against such individuals, provided the money was made through legal enterprises. Additionally they would be taxed according to the taxation levels of the specific year the funds were generated.
