Another Tragedy Involving a Young Refugee Occurred in Lesvos

Another child refugee passed away when his parents attempted to make the dangerous journey from Turkey to the Greek island of Lesvos, in order to escape the war and conflict in the Middle East and travel to a northern European country.
Around 11:30 am a Greek Coast Guard vessel collected 56 migrants and refugees whose boat had capsized in the marine area of Sykamnias, northern Lesvos. The boat capsized due to a storm and Greek officers rushed to the scene to help the migrants and refugees, including a one-year-old boy who had fainted.
Despite the coast guard officers and volunteers’ efforts, the young child passed away. The doctors at Kalloni Health Center, pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Meanwhile, on Friday October 9th, another wooden boat, carrying around 200 migrants and refugees washed ashore in northeast Leros. Greek authorities rushed to the scene to help people disembark the boat safely with the assistance of private vessels.
On October 8th, late at night, the Greek coast guard also intervened in two other similar cases, rescuing a total of 118 migrants and refugees in the marine area near Lesvos.
