The Most Expensive Yacht in the World Arrives in Mykonos

mykonos-aPossibly the most expensive yacht in the world has arrived and set anchor near Mykonos’ most popular beach, Psarrou, Greece last Wednesday October 7. The luxurious boat which belongs to Russian businessman Andrey Melnichenko is the most expensive yacht that has ever been built. It reaches 394 feet in length and has the minimalist name “A.”
The boat’s strange shape, reminiscent of a submarine as well as the complex pieces used to build it, which were specially and uniquely designed, helped A set an example for what a luxurious yacht should be like. The vessel was designed by French designer Philippe Starck and it was completed in 2008, with a total cost estimate of 300 million dollars. Several companies involved in its construction were forced to declare bankruptcy, since the yacht’s unique and innovative style caused them to lose profits.
Andrey Melnichenko is considered one of the most secretive men in Russian, and his yacht is no exception. A’s crew has signed strict confidentiality agreements. Furthermore, it was reported that the crew is rarely informed in advance about the places they are going to visit, Melnichenko and his wife spontaneously decide on their destination.
The six-ton ship is pushed by the power of 24,000 horses reaching the impressive speed of 24 knots, thus ranking at third position among the fastest yachts of its size.
The A has a crew of 37 people, including engineers, security personnel, cleaners, boatswains, chefs and assistants, as well as waterski, jetski and cycling teachers. All staff wear specially designed uniforms. The annual maintenance costs amount to 20 million dollars, in order to fill the tank, Melnichenko spends around half a million dollars.
